With a territory measuring 289 km2, the Commonwealth of Dominica is only a few kilometers from the Island of Martinique to the south and Guadalupe to the north, halfway through the Eastern Caribbean Archipelago.
The island is one of the few in the Caribbean that still has a pre-Columbian population: the Carib Indians. The official language is English spoken with a Caribbean accent and a melodious French. Kwéyól, a variation of the Antillean Creole (French), and the Kokoy, a variation of the English Creole, are also spoken.
With a population estimated at approximately 70,000, it is known as “The Nature Island,” it is rich in lush tropical forests nourished by an abundant yearly rainfall. There are five volcanoes spread out In 7,000 hectares, making this land the richest center of biodiversity in the Antilles and an almost unexplored paradise for scientists and tourists. In 1997 the National Park ¨Morne Trois Pitons¨ was declared by the UNESCO the first World Heritage site in the Eastern Caribbean.
This 1342-meters high volcano makes it an impressive scientific and landscaping attraction. Dominica has several natural wonders such as 3 sweet-water lakes, thermal water fountains, fifty fumaroles and an “effervescent lake” among others.
It also offers outstanding areas for fishing, recreation and scuba diving, artificial reefs, spectacular waterfalls, added to imposing architectural sites of unequalled beauty.
